Lifestyle Newborn Session: A morning at home with the McGinns

There is a common misconception that newborn sessions need to be perfectly quiet, perfectly still, and perfectly curated. But if you already have a toddler at home, you know that "still" isn’t really a part of the vocabulary right now.

When I arrived at the McGinn home for their lifestyle newborn session, I knew we were going to capture something much better than a staged portrait—we were going to capture their actual life.

Two-year-old Malia brought all the energy, big smiles, and Taylor Swift dance breaks, while baby sister Halle kept things perfectly calm. Between the couch cuddles and endless giggles, these photos feel like a true reflection of what home feels like for them right now.

As a photographer, these are always my absolute favorite sessions. There is no stiff posing or forcing everyone to look at the camera (but don't worry, we end up capturing that perfect moment too!). Instead, we spent the morning doing exactly what home is meant for—cuddling on the couch, tickling toes, and laughing through the chaos.

These fast, fleeting moments are the ones that matter most, and I'm so grateful to the McGinn family for welcoming me into their home and letting me document this beautiful new chapter.

Three Tips for Your Own In-Home Newborn Session

If you’re preparing for a lifestyle session with a newborn and a toddler, here is how we keep things relaxed:

  • Let the Toddler Lead: Forcing a two-year-old to sit still usually backfires. If they want to dance, we dance. The best shots happen when they are allowed to be themselves.
  • Embrace the Chaos: A crying baby or a jumping toddler isn't a ruined photo—it's real life. Lean into the energy of your home.
  • Keep It Comfortable: Stick to the spaces where you naturally spend time. Couch cuddles and bedroom floor play always make for the most authentic backdrops.
